How to Play

In Malas: Sumpa ng Buwan players must survive the weeklong affliction cast upon the town, but what survival looks like differs depending on whose side you’re on.

Players will be divided into three factions, each distinct from one another with their own abilities, challenges, and set of conditions that need to be met in order to win. More information on the roles and their cards can be found in the Cards section.

Taumbayan

Win when all Halimaw have been voted out during the voting period

Halimaw

Win when at least one survives the voting period of the final day

When members of all other factions have been eliminated

Natatangi

Win when all Halimaw are eliminated using their ability

Set-up

Malas: Sumpa ng Buwan is recommended to be played by groups of at least 7 players going all the way up to a max of 13 players including the Babaylan, though a box will contain enough cards for even larger games to be played.

1 Halimaw
1 Natatangi
4 Taumbayan

For every additional player add one more Taumbayan to the game. If there are more than 9 players present, add one more Halimaw.

Assigning the Babaylan

At the start of every game, assign one player to be the Babaylan or the Shaman. A medium for the spirits plaguing Sta. Anna, she takes on the role of the gamemaster throughout your game.

The Babaylan is responsible for giving players their roles, drawing Kapalaran or Event cards, announcing what took place during the night, and awakening players to allow them to take their actions.

They cannot vote or take any actions, cannot win or lose, and cannot be targeted by any vote or action throughout the game. They are also not allowed to participate in discussion periods, as they must remain impartial throughout the game.

As the Babaylan, it’s your job to make sure the game flows smoothly and that everyone enjoys themselves and feels immersed in the world of Malas: Sumpa ng Buwan.
